August 2013 Wedding

Melanie contacted us via e-mail after finding us by searching the internet.  We conversed throughout the winter, sending photos and ideas back and forth.  By the end of the winter we pretty much had figured out what flowers would fit into their colour scheme.

Melanie, Emile and their Mom's came out to the farm a couple of weeks prior to the wedding and toured the gardens.  They finalized the flowers they liked and what would work for the bout's, bouquets and centrepieces.  Throughout our walk in the gardens Emile kept commenting how much he liked the Sunflowers and wanted a boutonniere made with a Sunflower.  So we made a small bouquet of sunflowers, just for Emile, and delivered it along with the wedding flowers.

The Boutonniere's consisted of Gomphrena, Sedum, Juncus grass, Baby's Breath and Stock.

We needed a lot of soft pink flowers for this wedding, as you can see.   We ended up cutting flowers the morning of the wedding, before we headed off to the market, in the light of dawn.  We were able to find enough flowers that were ready for picking that morning to finish off the mason jar centrepieces.  That's cutting it close!

The blue mason jars consisted of Dahlias, Cosmos, Sweet Peas, Bell's of Ireland, Zinnias, Frosted Explosion Grass and Queen Anne's Lace.  We delivered and set up the centrepieces.

My daughter Mandy, helped me set up the flowers at the wedding venue and took a few photos with our point and shoot camera.

Once the flowers were on the tables they really transformed the room.

The bouquets consisted of Dahlias, Baby's Breath, Dusty Miller, Bachelor Buttons and Hydrangea.

August 2013 Wedding

Meet Stephanie and Landon!

When Stephanie and her friend came by the farm to pick out flowers I remember it was an extremely hot day as we cruised around the flower gardens, picking out the colours and types of flowers they liked.  They wanted orange and lime green, so they decided on Dahlias, Zinnias, and Bells of Ireland along with a little bit of blue (Sea Holly) and pink.

They found an old farmsite in the area as one of the locations for photos. 

So fun! 

Great choice of colours.  They look fantastic with the girl's dresses.

Mandy suggested our flower gardens would be a unique location for wedding photos.

Porcupine adventure.

We usually have at least one porcupine whom finds our yard each winter and can't resist the tasty Silver Leaf Willow trees.  If we allow the porcupine to feast it eventually kills the trees.  It does not take too long for the rodents to do enough damage that it permanently affects the trees.  Lost an ornamental Crabapple last winter. 

Pat is using a long piece of wood to get the porcupine out of the willow tree.  They are very stubborn and not intimidated by humans, so it took a lot of coaxing to get it out of the tree and out in the open.

Finally, it had had enough and started walking away from the area.  We then placed a barrel over it, (thankfully they can't run too quickly) and tilted the barrel on an angle and pushed the porcupine in the barrel with the piece of wood.  All this time Max (our dog) was barking in a very high pitch and darting around.  He was very excited, but did not try to get too close.  Maybe he had an encounter with one before.

Success!!!!  We had captured the rodent without harming it and there was no way it was able to climb up the smooth sides of the barrel.  We loaded the barrel onto the back of the truck and Pat relocated him several miles away.

September Wedding

I hope you will enjoy these summery pictures of Amanda & Deanna's wedding that took place September 2013.  We thoroughly enjoyed creating the bright colourful arrangements for them.  

Amanda and Deanna drove out to the farm a week before their wedding and we took a tour of all the gardens, checking out the different flowers and colours.  It really is a unique experience to walk through gardens and choose the flowers to be used on your wedding day.  They were both drawn to the bold bright colours of late summer, orange, burgundy, and deep pink.

They chose Dahlias as their focal flowers and we used Scabiosa, Black Knight Queen Annes Lace, Zinnias and Ageratum as the secondary and fillers. 

The Bridesmaids bouquets included Rudbeckia, Dianthus, Celosia, Zinnia, couple of Dahlias, Ageratum, Black Knight, and Bachelor buttons.

 Amanda fell in love with the blue Bachelor Buttons so we used several stems of those in her bouquet and included at least one or two in Deanna's.

Photos of Maui.

We headed off to Maui, Hawaii in November and stayed for a few weeks.  We had a great time exploring the beaches, inland and the Haleakala crater, highest elevation on the island.  From the pictures I chose to post you can get an idea of what I enjoyed the most. There were flowers EVERYWHERE.  The sights and smells were intoxicating.  We visited three of the four botanical gardens on the island and hiked along paths throughout the forests and along the coasts.  The weather was fabulous and we came home rested and feeling great.

These trees were everywhere and very fascinating.  The colours were unbelievable.

Type of Agave, I believe.

Of course the ocean.  

The coast and ocean were spectacular.  Lots of turtles swimming around the rocks eating the green foliage growing on the rocks.   Our daily beach walks were often highlighted with glimpses of the turtles.  The Humpback Whales were starting to arrive in the area to give birth and mate, so we were fortunate to see several sightings.  If you have the opportunity to visit, go for it.

July Wedding

The snow is here to stay (or so it seems) so it is now time to get into the winter slowdown and start relaxing for a month or two.  We have been busy putting together our plant wish list and we are super excited to see all the new blooms we will have this summer, along with the tried and true workhorses that never disappoint. The seed catalogues seem to take take forever to arrive and we have only received a couple so far.  Hope there will be lots of new varieties of cut flowers available.

We had a great day at the Collectively Green Holiday Sale on Saturday.  Thanks to everyone whom came out and supported everyone participating.  Enjoy the bird houses and bird feeders Pat created for the sale.  Hope they bring you countless hours of enjoyment observing the birds.

Holiday Sale

We are participating in our first ever Holiday Sale, The Collectively Green Holiday Sale.  We participated in the first ever Collectively Green Sale in Spring of 2013, and the organizers decided to coordinate a Holiday Sale, so we really could not resist in supporting and participating in this fantastic concept.  All items for sale are one of a kind which have been recycled, upcycled, ethically produced, earth friendly and in our case naturally grown.  The sale takes place on 

Saturday Nov 16th from 10:00-6:00 at the Grace Westminster Church 505 10th St. East.

Pat has been busy building birdhouses and birdfeeders from recycled wood that once were used for corrals.  The birds are an important part of our environment at the farm as they play a vital role in keeping the insect populations in check.  Another very important creature for insect control are bats and Pat will have his cedar bat houses on display for purchase.  We are making bird seed feeders in various shapes that you hang in your trees to attract the birds to your yard this winter.  We really enjoy observing the birds.

Dried flowers, packaged dried culinary herbs grown by us, Mistik Acres home grown salsa, pine door swags and red willow for holiday decorating, will be available for purchase.

There is a Silent Auction taking place with fabulous items up for grabs with all proceeds going to the Saskatoon Food Bank.
