Summer Workshops

We are so excited to be able to offer and host Workshops this summer.
The first two we have scheduled are Flower Farming Workshops on August 9 and another on August 24th.
These workshops are not only geared toward growing flowers on a larger scale but also will be very useful information for the home gardener.

The workshop on August 9th will feature detailed instruction on creating a hand held flower bouquet by Angelina of Hawthorn Floral Atelier.

The Aug 24th workshop will not include instruction of a bouquet but you will cut flowers from the gardens to take home with you.

We will walk through the gardens discussing the methods and processes we use to grow over 175 varieties of flowers and greens.  We will be sharing lots of detailed information and encourage lots of questions from the attendee's.

As the gardens grow and mature we hope to offer tours of the gardens this summer.  These walkabouts would be geared towards individuals whom are not interested in learning about the growing of cut flowers.

Spring update!

Spring is clipping along at breakneck speed.  Not enough time in the day to get all the tasks completed.  It has been frustrating lately as we have had to hold off transplanting anything frost sensitive due to the cold front that moved into the province yesterday and is hanging around for another day or two.  But we have focused on transplanting all the snapdragons, stock, dianthus, forget me nots, annual phlox, lupines, sweet peas, icelandic poppies and campunala. 

The anemone and ranunculus corms are all starting to grow.  We soaked them and covered them with mulch this week so now will patiently wait to see those lovely blooms.

All the birds are now back to the yard as well as the bats have taken up residence in the bat houses again.  Pat had to put up more houses for the Tree Swallows again this year so we are probably up to about 60 pairs of birds on our land.  

We are really looking forward  to this growing season as we have an extra pair of hands to assist us with the production of the flowers.  We would like to welcome Sara Kuleza to the farm.  She volunteered at the farm last year and was interested in helping us out this year on a regular basis.

The greenhouses are stuffed due to the cold temps last night.  Everything that was being hardened off was brought indoors.

The Clematis's we bought and planted last fall are growing like crazy.  I think we will be cutting those this summer.

Both of the above Dahlias will be available at the Saskatoon Farmers Market Saturday May 30th.  These two particular varieties will be on sale at 50% off.  Regular price is $10.00 each.  If you still have room in your garden come on down and pick yourself up a few plants.  We will also have a large selection of Dahlias at regular price as well.

Catch up!

July has just vanished, poof, into thin air.  Not sure how that happened, but we are into August already and that means the growing season has about a month left.  The annual flowers are behind in their blooming.  The Sweet Peas are just starting to produce with a bit of vigor and the Dahlias are beginning to show us multiple blooms.  The peony season was a huge success and I am planning on adding some new varieties to my inventory, including a few more of the Itoh Bartzella pictured below.

The pictures below are of a couple of weddings we provided flowers for, at the end of July.

Below is our display at the Saskatoon Farmers Market.  Vibrant colour and lots of selection. 

Other happenings at the farm include a successful chicken raising venture.  All the birds did well and the butchering process went well, but not without a few hiccups. The chicken plucker machine broke down just as we were starting a full day of butchering, so we plucked them all by hand.
